Michelle and Barack Obama set out to visit Montserrat Monastery with Spielberg

Barack and Michelle Obama hit the road again with Hollywood director Steven Spielberg the day after watching Bruce Springsteen return to the stage in Spain.

The former president and first lady looked relaxed as they donned casual clothes and sunglasses as they waved to tourists during a trip to Catalonia’s popular Montserrat monastery on Saturday afternoon.

Obama took the time to walk up to a group of tourists and shake hands with them before visiting the monastery – one of the most famous pilgrimage sites that also offers breathtaking views of Catalonia.

Spielberg, wearing his signature baseball cap, was seen waving to the crowd as he walked behind the Obamas with his wife and actress Kate Capshaw.

Photos from the convent showed the Obamas admiring the world-famous Black Madonna – also known as ‘La Moreneta’.

Large crowds of locals and tourists surrounded the Obamas’ car, hoping to get a photo or a handshake from one of the most famous couples in the world.

The two couples have had a busy few days in Spain, enjoying the best of Barcelona on a trip that marks Springsteen’s return to Spain – the first time he has performed in the country since May 2016.

Springsteen, who is currently touring Europe, met Obama on the 2008 presidential campaign trail and played on his fundraisers.

The Obamas have been good friends with The Boss and his wife for years.

In 2021, Obama and Springsteen even hosted a podcast that spawned the book Renegades: Born in the USA.

Mrs. Obama stunned Springsteen fans by taking the stage at Barcelona’s Olympic Stadium with actress Mrs. Capshaw on Friday night.

The pair shared a mic with Patti Scialfa, Springsteen’s wife and E Street band mate, and played tambourine on the hit Glory Days.

The Obamas and Spielbergs have taken the time to visit some of Barcelona’s most famous cultural sites, including the Sagrada Familia Basilica and the Picasso Museum on Friday.

The night before, they went out to dinner with the Springsteens at Amar, a highly regarded seafood restaurant known for its oysters and caviar in the center of town.

The restaurant staff was stunned by the last-minute booking and managed to get a photo with Obama, Spielberg and Springsteen.

El Pais reported that the Obamas are staying at the city’s five-star Gran Hotel La Florida for their high-profile European vacation.

A large motorcade and security detail are deployed for the former president and first lady’s journey, with many plainclothes guards standing beside them during their appearances.

The Obamas were spotted touring Barcelona with Spielberg and his wife all weekend, including for the Springsteen concert where they visited the famous MOCO Museum and had lunch at the luxurious Terraza Martinez restaurant overlooking the city.
