Michael Skubala will remain in charge of Leeds for the rest of the month, and possibly the rest of the season, after the club failed to land one of their main targets to replace Jesse Marsch.
The Under-21 coach has been in charge of the Whites’ last two games, a 2-2 draw at Manchester United and a 2-0 home loss against the same rival, following the sacking of Marsch last week.
Skubala has impressed players and club bosses since he took the reins and will now be in control of Saturday’s clash against relegation rivals Everton and visiting Southampton, which will notably be led by Marsch.
The 40-year-old is now likely to stay for the remainder of the campaign, but Leeds reserve the right to sign a new man if the team’s form falters or a preferred candidate becomes available.
Skubala, who will be supported by Paco Gallardo and Chris Armas, said: ‘I have really enjoyed the experience and the team and staff have responded well. I know that I speak for Paco and Chris when I say that it is an honor to be in the band of this club.
Michael Skubala will remain in charge of Leeds for the rest of the month, and possibly the rest of the season.
Leeds have yet to find a permanent replacement for Jesse Marsch, who was sacked on February 6.
“We will continue to work tirelessly to help move up the table in the short term, while the board focuses on the long-term future of the team.”
The Leeds manager search has been fraught with challenges as all of their favorite options had jobs and would only be available in the summer.
Andoni Iraola was football director Víctor Orta’s first choice, but removing him from his contract with Rayo Vallecano proved problematic.
Another candidate, Feyenoord boss Arne Slot, opted to stay in the Dutch league leaders, while West Brom boss Carlos Corberan signed a new contract with the Championship club.
Former Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder was ruled out to become Leeds boss despite attending last Sunday’s game at Elland Road.
Former Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder attended last Sunday’s match at Elland Road and was considered for the role, but talks ended after backlash from fans over his possible appointment.
Leeds are set to review a move for one of their main late-season targets, most likely Iraola.
But with time running out before Saturday’s game with Everton, they have decided to set the record straight by announcing that Skubala will lead the ‘next games’.
Skubala joined the Whites last summer to take charge of the Under-21s after previously managing England’s Fustal and England’s Under-18s.
