Former NFL star Michael Oher has sued the family popularized by the critically acclaimed 2009 film, The blind sideclaiming he was tricked into signing a document making them conservators – not his adoptive parents – allowing them to take advantage of him.

Widespread belief was that Oher was indeed the adopted son of Sean and Leigh Anne Touhy, the latter of whom was played by Sandra Bullock in the Academy Award-winning role.

In 2004, while Oher was 18 years old, he signed a petition that made them his conservators – in other words, able to legally act on his behalf for business interests.

ESPN was the first report that Oher filed a 14-page petition on Monday in Shelby County, Tennessee, alleging that the film’s central role was a lie and that the Tuohy family was using it as a means to gain even more wealth.

The blind side, a book by Michael Lewis that became the basis for an Oscar-winning film, grossed $309 million. According to other allegations in the lawsuit, the conservatorship enabled the Tuohy family to make a deal in which they – including their two children – would receive royalties for the heartwarming film.

The 2009 Oscar-winning film, Oher claims, is based on a lie and that he has been duped

Oher claims he didn’t even receive a penny from the movie that chronicles his story of triumph from homelessness to first-round NFL draft pick.

“The lie of Michael’s adoption is one on which co-curators Leigh Anne Tuohy and Sean Tuohy have enriched themselves at the expense of their department, the undersigned Michael Oher,” read the legal filing obtained by ESPN.

Michael Oher discovered this lie much to his chagrin and embarrassment in February 2023 when he learned that the conservatory he agreed to on the basis that this would make him a member of the Tuohy family did not, in fact, give him a family relationship with the Tuohys .’

Oher has also asked for the conservatory to end, in addition to an injection that would prevent them from using his name and likeness.

The now-retired offensive lineman is also seeking “a complete accounting” of the money the family has made thanks to him.

In his 2011 bestseller I beat the oddsOher described his version of how the conservatory came about.

“They explained to me that it means something like ‘adoptive parents,’ but that the laws were written to take my age into account.”

In high school, Oher received several scholarship offers from Alabama, LSU, and Tennessee, among others, but chose Ole Miss – the Tuohy’s alma mater.

During his four years at Oxford, Oher was All-SEC three times. He was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens with the 23rd overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.

Oher played five seasons with the Ravens, one in Tennessee and his final two years in Carolina.

Over nine seasons in the league, Oher earned a total of $34.5 million per Spotrac.
