Michael Jordan museum ‘will NOT go ahead’ in his hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina as family of Bulls legend ‘decides not to pursue’ idea

Plans for a Michael Jordan museum in his hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina have reportedly failed.

Jordan, widely considered the greatest player in NBA history, played at the city’s Laney High School before playing at the University of North Carolina and winning six championships and six MVP trophies with the Bulls.

But according to the Wilmington Star NewsPrevious plans to honor Jordan with a museum — part of a broader downtown investment called “Project Grace” — will not move forward.

The publication cited a news release from New Hanover County government saying the “Jordanian family” had decided against the idea.

“Discussions during this due diligence and discovery phase were collaborative and productive, but the family has decided not to establish a Michael Jordan Family Museum at this time,” the release said.

According to StarNews, New Hanover District Manager Chris Coudriet announced in December that Wilmington could get a Jordan museum.

The same month, a memorandum of understanding, dated December 4, was reportedly signed by Coudriet and Jordan’s mother, Deloris P. Jordan.

The new museum would have included “important artifacts and objects to tell the family’s story,” and would have been part of a project that would also bring a new library to downtown Wilmington.

“While this museum is not moving forward, the county looks forward to continuing to work with the Jordan family to display memorabilia from Michael Jordan’s life and career at the Cape Fear Museum and appreciates their continued support of our community,” said the press release.

The Laney High School sports complex is named after Jordan.

The ex-Bulls star owned the Charlotte Hornets for 13 years before selling his majority shares last year.
