Michael Cera opens up about almost marrying Aubrey Plaza and being SLAPPED by Rihanna
Michael Cera talks about some of his most iconic roles.
The Black Mirror star, 35, shared some behind-the-scenes revelations from his nearly quarter century in front of the camera.
In an interview with Rolling stonethe actor revealed that after starring in 2010’s Scott Pilgrim vs the World, he and co-star Aubrey Plaza, who he dated for about 18 months, almost tied the knot.
“Well, we were driving through Vegas and we almost spontaneously took a detour and got married,” the comedian explained.
The idea was not for a permanent union, but ‘something you get a certificate for’. I think the idea was to get a divorce right then, so we could call each other ‘my ex-husband’ and ‘my ex-wife’ at about . . 20,” he said with a laugh.

The Canadian star has nothing but praise for the career of his former ‘fiancée’.
“She’s always been so dedicated to everything she does. I’m not surprised she’s doing really well,” he said in admiration of the White Lotus star who has branched out into other areas of show business.
“What surprises me is how much she produces and puts projects together. It is awesome. Ingrid going west? That was so great.’
Then there was the story of Rihanna’s infamous slapstick, who had a cameo in 2013’s apocalyptic comedy This Is the End.
Co-star and co-writer Seth Rogen described the story to MTV like Michael told the Grammy winner, “I’m really going to punch the shit out of your ass,” and she said, “Then I’m really gonna punch the shit out of your face.”‘
“I think that’s a slightly revised version,” Michael said.
“I thought it would look much better if she hit me. I don’t think it took much convincing to get her to do it. I just thought it would look much better than a fake punch because you can really feel it. It just looks a lot funnier!
“Apparently there were several takes,” he recalled, “and she got harder and harder with each take. I certainly didn’t regret it! I felt like it.’
I do?: Michael revealed that he and ex-girlfriend Audrey Plaza almost got married in Vegas. I think the idea was to get a divorce right then so we could call each other ‘my ex-husband’ and ‘my ex-wife’ at about… 20,” he said (pictured in Los Angeles in July 2010)
Slap: Michael said Rihanna’s slap in This Is the End was real. “I don’t think it took much convincing to get her to do it. I just thought it would look much better than a fake punch because you can actually feel it. It just looks much funnier!’ he explained (pictured in April in Las Vegas)
Barbie: Michael has a role in the upcoming Barbie. “It came up at the very last minute for me. I was brought in right before they started filming. It was so exciting to be there. Great people to hang out with,” he said of the cast and crew
“The shot in the movie, she really touched my ear, which was disorienting. But I have no regrets. Luckily I didn’t lose any hearing!’
The funny man was also on the receiving end of Salma Hayek’s hand in season six of Black Mirror, but that blow wasn’t real. “She was cool,” he said of the interaction.
The veteran actor has nothing but positive things to say about his experience in the upcoming Barbie.
“It came up at the very last minute for me. I was brought in right before they started filming. It was so exciting to be there. Great people to hang out with,” he said of the cast and crew.
The costumes for the production were quite complicated.
He wore a full wig for his role with Allen. “Everyone in the movie had to get full-body makeup,” he said.
“And it’s really breaking it down. At the end of the day, they take almond oil on a cloth [to take it off] and it smells funny, and then you have to go home and take a shower. We’re all painted to be all Barbie-colored.”
Barbie will be in cinemas from July 21.
