Michael Carrick will be announced as Middlesbrough’s new head coach after agreeing personal terms with the Championship club, marking his first step into full-time management since leaving Manchester United last year.
The former Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup winner will soon sign his contract with Boro after being identified as Chris Wilder’s successor.
Carrick initially indicated he would not accept the position due to backroom staffing and transfer issues, but those issues have now been resolved with the 41-year-old set for his debut stint in the second division dugout.

Boro has been looking for a new boss since he sacked former Sheffield United chief Wilder in early October, and took the time to find the right candidate when Leo Percovich took over as interim manager.
He has been out of work since leaving his post as interim manager of Man United after succeeding Ole Gunnar Soksjaer in the post with Carrick taking control of the Premier League giants for three games at the end of 2021.

The Englishman is keen to draw on his experience at Old Trafford and is keen to bring Sir Alex Ferguson’s former assistants Mike Phelan and Rene Meulensteen to the club as part of his coaching journey.
Carrick could be in charge of Saturday’s visit to Huddersfield
Contracts for Carrick’s backroom staff are in the works, Sky Sports reports.
His first game in charge of Middlesbrough could come as early as Saturday, when they host fellow fighters Huddersfield knowing a win could take them out of the relegation zone.
Carrick was undefeated in his temporary role at United, where he oversaw a Champions League win over Villareal, defeated Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in the Premier League and held out in a 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
As a player, Carrick enjoyed tremendous success under Sir Alex, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho. Quit playing in 2018 at age 36.
He then immediately moved into management, joining Mourinho’s backroom team at the club and remaining under Solskjaer for two seasons.
The arrival of Ralf Rangnick in Manchester midway through last season saw Carrick leave in search of a new leadership role elsewhere.
