A man shot himself dead in front of his girlfriend before she was struck by the same bullet that killed him, police said.

The incident happened around 4 a.m. Wednesday in Miami at a home on the 11000 block of Southwest 30th Street.

Members of the Miami-Dade Police Department were seen outside the investigation site, although the names of the two individuals have yet to be released.

The unnamed woman was taken to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, officers said, where she was listed in stable condition. Police said four of her children, all under the age of 21 and from previous relationships, were home at the time but were not injured.

“This is clearly suicide at this point,” Zabaleta said as she appeared for a news conference in the suburb.

He added that the incident “was not necessarily a domestic attempted murder-suicide,” and that the man merely committed suicide and “nearly robbed his girlfriend in the process.”

He concluded: “All indications at this time are that the same projectile that struck his head also struck the female.”

“I was really shocked by this event,” neighbor Irene Again told ABC affiliate WPLG, adding, “It’s very sad because the children are involved.”

Spokesperson Zabaleta revealed afterwards that it was one of the children who called, after anxiously contacting a relative to tell them they had been woken by a single gunshot, while the relative told them to contact the police.

The property’s owners – who had been renting out the house – told the couple – told CBS News that they were also woken up early in the morning by the sounds of children screaming in the driveway.

‘My mother-in-law called me and said we had to come because the police were there. We don’t know what happened,” a woman whose family owns the property and lives in another house on the property told the station.

‘We just rented the house to them ten days ago. I’m afraid you have such weapons in your home with small children and you don’t keep them safe.’

Meanwhile, neighbor Tamatane Aga told the newspaper how the indecency has left her desperate.

“It saddens me immensely to see someone taking God’s will into their own hands,” she said. “Oh my, how awful.”
