Miami Dolphins considering ruling star QB Tua Tagovailoa out for the SEASON to give him time to mull over retirement after third concussion

Tua Tagovailoa could be sidelined for the entire season to give him time to think about retiring after his latest serious concussion, DailyMail.com can reveal.

The Miami Dolphins quarterback suffered his third serious head injury in Thursday night’s loss to the Buffalo Bills and was therefore out of the game.

He is expected to be sidelined for the time being, but a source close to the team has now revealed he may have played the final game of his career.

“It appears the Dolphins will sit Tua out for the entire season to give him time to think about retiring from the NFL,” the source told DailyMail.com.

“The recovery and emotions are in full swing at this time and no immediate decisions have been made, but after this latest concussion it is almost certain that the NFL and the Miami Dolphins will strongly recommend that he retire.”

Tagovailoa himself is strongly against the advice to hang up his football boots and is keen to extend his career, despite his latest injury.

“Tua absolutely wants to keep playing,” the source continued. “As soon as he’s better, he wants to be on the pitch.”

“It’s going to be a long road before people can convince him to retire. He doesn’t want to retire at all.”

Tagovailoa took a hard blow to the head from the Bills’ Damar Hamlin on Thursday night and immediately took to the field while other players desperately called for medical attention.

He left the field under his own power, but was clearly shaken. It took less than six minutes for doctors to diagnose his concussion.

Tagovailoa has now suffered three known concussions in the NFL after his 2022 season was cut short due to a head injury.

In week 3 of that year he was tackled hard and went into battle with a fencing action, but he later returned to the match.

In week 4, he suffered another concussion after a heavy blow and was carried off the field on a stretcher.

Later in the season, in Week 16, he suffered another concussion, which ended his season and led to a change in the NFL’s concussion protocol.

Tagovailoa hasn’t missed a single game in the 2023 season after gaining weight over the summer. However, he showed up for the most recent pre-season with a significantly slimmed-down frame.

In a post-game speech, head coach Mike McDaniel took a different stance than many on the future of his star quarterback.

“I think it would be very wrong for me to even start on that subject,” the 41-year-old said when asked if Tagovailoa would leave the game.

“It’s more along the lines of actually caring about the person. You’re talking about his career. His career is his.

“I totally get why people want to go there. I just wanted people to hear what I’m saying, which is that it’s not in his best interest to bring up his future.

I would urge anyone who really cares to consider this as the last thing they do.

‘If I answered that question and he read it, whether he agreed with it or not, it would make him feel worse.

“I don’t think it’s appropriate out of my concern and respect. I don’t think that these kinds of conversations when you’re talking about someone’s career… I think it’s fair that their career is defined by them.”
