Mexican star who was in the Brad Pitt film Babel and acted with Pierce Brosnan on a 007 movie dies at 80
Acclaimed Mexican actor Emilio Echevarría has died at the age of 80, the Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences announced Monday.
The star, who appeared in the James Bond film Die Another Day and the Brad Pitt ensemble Babel, died on Saturday.
He is also known for playing El Chivo opposite Gael Garcia Bernal in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s gritty 2000 underworld film Amores Perros.
And he made two more projects with Bernal: Y Tu Mama Tambien and Mozart in the Jungle.
The star was born in Mexico City and started acting in the 1970s. He became a national treasure when he was nominated three times for Mexico’s Ariel Awards.

The star appeared in the 2002 James Bond film Die Another Day with Pierce Brosnan
Although he entered the acting world in the 1970s, he didn’t get his big break until the late 1980s.
Echevarría’s first role was in 1989’s Intimidad, then in Bathroom Intimacy and Los Pasos de Ana.
His first major role came in the twisted drama Amores Perros.
The bilingual star then had a significant role in the 2001 film Y Tu Mamá También starring Bernal and notable Mexican actor Diego Luna, best known for Narcos.
He next stood out as intelligence agent and Bond ally Raoul opposite Brosnan in Die Another Day in 2002.
Halle Berry and Rosamund Pike were also involved in the 007 adventure that took place in North Korea and Cuba.
Emilio was then in John Lee Hancock’s The Alamo (2004).

He played a man named Emilio in the 2006 film Babel, which also starred Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett.
Other credits include 1990’s Dying in the Gulf, 2015’s A Monster With A Thousand Heads and 2018’s The Chosen.
All three of these performances earned Echevarría an Ariel Award nomination.
Emilio also collaborated with friend Bernal in Mozart in the Jungle (2015) about Maestro Thomas taking his final bow with the New York Symphony.
The applause dies down and the chairwoman of the orchestra introduces a new conductor: the young, flamboyant, talented Rodrigo, who steps onto the stage, bows and turns his baton into a rose.
The show also starred Bernadette Peters and Malcolm McDowell.
Emilio is survived by his daughter, actress Lourdes Echevarría, who starred in Dark Cities and A Mother’s Love.
