Mexican judge orders 5 arrested for homicide in migrant fire
A fire at an immigrant detention center in northern Mexico last week killed 40 migrants and refugees.
A judge has ordered the detention of three Mexican immigration officers, a private security guard and a Venezuelan migrant for investigation in connection with a fire at an immigrant detention center in northern Mexico that killed 40 migrants and refugees.
The four people responsible for security at the Ciudad Juarez facility will be held on charges of negligent death and causing injury, while the migrant who allegedly started the fire is charged with murder and causing injury , the Federal Judicial Council of Mexico said after Tuesday’s hearing.
Video from a security camera at the facility shows guards walking away when the fire broke out last Monday in the cell that held migrants and refugees and made no attempt to release them.
It was not clear whether those guards had the keys to the cell doors. More than two dozen migrants and refugees were seriously injured in the blaze.
