Mets suffer injury blow as Brandon Nimmo hobbles off just days after their Edwin Diaz got hurt

New York Mets star Brandon Nimmo suffered an injury during a spring training win over Miami in Port St. Lucie.

Nimmo awkwardly slid to second base with the Mets leading 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

He was writhing in pain and was initially unable to get up on his own, requiring the help of medical staff before limping to the bench.

Mets manager Buck Showalter was confident the right ankle injury was nothing particularly serious and ruled out the need for an X-ray while speaking to reporters after the game.

Nimmo is receiving an MRI on his injured ankle on Saturday. The 29-year-old signed an eight-year, $162 million extension with New York this offseason to continue his career as a one-club man.

Fortunately, Buck Showalter (left) believes the injury is not serious, but will require an MRI.

The center fielder’s injury follows a difficult week for the organization after star closer Edwin Díaz suffered a likely season-ending injury during celebrations following Puerto Rico’s victory in the World Baseball Classic on Wednesday.

Diaz was wheelchair bound following a patellar tendon injury in his right knee after Wednesday night’s game.

He has since undergone surgery, and his return timeline is reported to be approximately eight months.

Mets fans were left distraught after the relief pitcher, who just re-signed with New York on a five-year, $102 million contract, was listed as a probable offseason by MLB.

“To all my beloved fans, especially Mets fans, I want to let you know that I am safe and on the mend,” Diaz wrote on his social media platforms Thursday night.

‘I feel blessed and grateful for your support with messages and prayers, thank you very much!

“I can’t wait to see them in New York again and blow those trumpets.”
