The Mets will call up their No. 2 prospect and third baseman Brett Baty on his sweltering form for New York’s Triple-A team at Syracuse, as he hit .400 with five homers, two doubles and a 1,386 OPS in nine games in the minor leagues.
The Mets have yet to confirm the widely anticipated roster update, though SNY’s Andy Martino first reported the news on Sunday. On Twitter, Jon Heyman, of The New York Post, shared that Baty is expected to team up with senior team members in LA for the Mets’ game against the LA Dodgers on Monday.
Baty, 23, is ranked as the number 19 overall prospect in the league round MLB. com. His call could hurt starting Mets third baseman Eduardo Escobar, who hit .11 with one home run and a .394 OPS in 13 games since Opening Day.
On Sunday, ahead of the Mets’ final game in a three-game series against the A’s, manager Buck Showalter said he didn’t want to talk about Baty’s promotion and would “talk about it if it could happen.”
On Saturday, the 66-year-old avoided a question about the infielder’s hot start in the minor leagues before finally saying in response to a follow-up, “It’s what he’s supposed to do.”

Subsequently, the veteran manager praised Syracuse’s influence on the career progression of some Mets prospects. The ballclub, based in New York State, is ranked fourth in the International League (IL) this season, compiling a record of 9-5.
