A new month not only means the arrival of a new Meta Quest 3 update – with the recent v68 rollout adding handy free house design tools – it also signals the arrival of new free games to the Meta Quest Plus subscription. This month (August 2024), those are the story-driven puzzle adventures Mystery – a classic remade in VR – and Ragnarock – a rhythm racing game with a Norse and Viking theme.
Mystery VR is a remake of the puzzle game first released in 1993, which was remade several times with better graphics and more interactivity as computers improved.
It’s an icon of the genre, and while it’s not considered by everyone to be the perfect puzzle game – partly due to its age – it’s a title that many agree you should check out. And since the VR version is free with Quest Plus, there’s no better reason to finally give it a try.
Ragnarok, on the other hand, is a gritty racer where you use your hammers to pound drums to Viking-inspired music, making your boat row faster and earning you gold medals in single and multiplayer matches.
If you’re looking for other VR games, check out my favorite Meta Quest 3 games and apps of July 2024.
For a monthly fee of $7.99 / £7.99 (or an annual fee of $59.99 / £59.99, which is a big saving) you can get access to a lot of free VR games through Meta Quest Plus. There are titles like Mystery And Ragnarok which you can only download for free during a certain month, but which you can then play as long as you are subscribed (or if you re-subscribe if your membership expires).
There are games in a Netflix-esque rotating catalog – which currently includes the following Demeo, Walking mini golf, Tetris effectand 9 others – who will rotate in and out. So you won’t always be able to play a specific title, but you will find something to keep you entertained.
If you want to play a lot of different VR games and don’t really have a preference about what you play, Quest Plus is a good deal. It’s also included in Meta’s buy now, pay later scheme for the Quest 3, though that way of getting a 512GB headset and membership isn’t as good a deal as it could be, as we found.
