Mark Zuckerberg announces that Meta is rolling out ‘Meta Verified’ for Instagram and Facebook profiles for a subscription fee of $12 a month, and requires a government ID unlike Twitter’s blue tick
- Zuckerberg announced the new verified option on Sunday morning
- It will cost web users $11.99/month and iOS and Android users $14.99/month.
- The new system will be rolled out for the first time in Australia and New Zealand this month.
Meta is launching a new paid verification subscription service called Meta Verified, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Sunday.
Coming soon, for $11.99/mo on web and $14.99/mo on iOs, Instagram and Facebook users will be able to pay to become a verified user, which will include, among other things, a blue verification badge.
The service will be introduced for the first time in New Zealand and Australia this year, and will be available “soon” in other nations, according to Zuckerberg.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the new verified system on Sunday morning.
The system, which appears to be very similar to Twitter’s new blue checkmark verification system, is rolling out this week in Australia and New Zealand.
“This week we started rolling out Meta Verified, a subscription service that lets you verify your account with a government ID, get a blue badge, get extra phishing protection against accounts claiming to be you, and get direct access to customer service. ‘ Meta boss Zuckerberg wrote on Instagram.
“This new feature is about increasing authenticity and security across all of our services.”
The company has previously granted verification to notable figures, including celebrities, business leaders, journalists, politicians, and athletes.
Meta said that those with pre-existing verification badges will not see their status or options change in the new era of subscription verification.
The new verification system closely resembles Elon Musk’s Twitter Blue service, which launched in December after an initially delayed launch.
Subscription to Twitter’s blue check mark costs users eight dollars a month.
In December, after a delay, Elon Musk launched his new Twitter blue verification system that costs users $8 per month for verification.
The new Meta system appears to be similar in many ways to the Twitter feature, which went through several rounds of bugs in the form of fake accounts, before reaching its final form.
According the edgeUsers who sign up for the new Meta systems will receive exclusive stickers for Stories and Reels, and will also receive 100 free stars per month, or the digital currency used to tip Facebook creators.
Businesses will still not be able to request a verified badge, and it will also be the case that if a person wants to change their profile name, username, birthday, or profile photo, they will have to go through the verification process every time. again.
Meta, unlike Twitter, will require users to submit government IDs to receive account verification and will also reportedly offer other security measures against fake accounts.
The higher price for the service on iOS and Android is likely something the company is doing to offset the commission Apple and Google stores charge for in-app purchases.
