Meta is targeting GPT-4 for its next AI model
Meta plans to meet, if not surpass, the powerful GPT-4 chatbots designed by OpenAI with its own advanced artificial intelligence bot. The company plans to train the large language model (LLM) early next year and likely hopes it will take the number one spot in the AI ββgame.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Meta has acquired Nvidia H100 AI training chips and strengthened its internal infrastructure to ensure that this time Meta will not have to rely on Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform to train its new chatbot.
The edge notes that there is already a group within the company that was formed earlier this year to begin building the model, with the clear goal of quickly creating a tool that can accurately mimic human expressions.
Is this what we want? And do companies find it important?
In June, a leak suggested there would be a new Instagram feature chatbots integrated into the platform who can answer questions, give advice and help users write messages. Interestingly, users would also be able to choose from β30 AI personalities and find out which one (they) like most.β
It seems like this leak could become a reality if Meta puts that much time and effort into replicating human expressiveness. Of course, the company will likely look to Snapchat AI for a comprehensive look at what not to do when it comes to squeezing AI chatbots into its apps, and hopefully skip the part Snapchat’s AI bot was teased and gave users something nice disturbing advice.
Overall, the AI ββbattle continues as big companies continue to climb to the top of a mysterious, undiscovered mountain. Meta is making a point of ensuring that the potential new LLM remains free for other companies to base their own AI tools on, a net positive in my books. We’ll just have to wait until next year to see what exactly is in store.
