Met Gala 2024: Sam Smith puts on an unusually conservative display as they and boyfriend Christian Cowan sport matching suits with metal rose pins

They became known for their viral outfits and haven’t been afraid to push the boundaries when it comes to fashion.

But Sam Smith opted for a more toned-down look on Monday as they arrived at this year’s Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

The 31-year-old singer, who is non-binary and uses their pronouns, presents themselves with their friend Christian Cowan, in matching outfits.

In contrast to their usual avant-garde looks with bizarre shapes, Sam wore a simple black blazer and matching trousers.

The Grammy winner added a white collared shirt underneath with a baby blue satin tie, and gave their look an androgynous element with a sheer skirt.

While fashion designer Christian, 28, wore the same outfit in white with a brown silk tie.

The couple completed their dapper look with metallic roses pinned to their jackets, with Sam opting for silver and Christian for gold.

They later explained that their outfits were inspired by the 1940s, while the roses were a reference to a gift Christian gave Sam early in their relationship.

They proved that their relationship is strong as they walked hand in hand, putting to rest rumors that they had broken up.

There were fears about romance over Christmas amid claims Sam had signed up to celebrity dating app Raya after the couple went their separate ways.

However, a source close to Sam revealed to MailOnline shortly afterwards that they were still together, questioning the authenticity of the star’s profile on Raya.

They told MailOnline: ‘Sam and Christian still have a strong relationship and haven’t been on Raya yet.

‘As there is a profile for them on the app, the fear now is that someone will pretend to be Sam and they will talk to Raya about it.’

The five-time Grammy winner has been dating Christian since January last year after they first met when the designer collaborated with Sam on the costumes for their music video, I’m Not Here to Make Friends.

Christian’s clientele includes A-stars Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B and Heidi Klum.

He confirmed his romance with Sam with a kiss in January 2023 as the two walked arm-in-arm in New York.

The Costume Institute’s Spring Exhibition falls on the first Monday in May each year and is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

This year the event is called Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, while the dress code is The Garden of Time.

Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth are this year’s co-chairs. Vogue’s is also on the committee Anna Wintour.

The chairs of honor for the evening are Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew.

“This year’s co-chairs reflect a variety of career achievements and each has their own style history at the Met Gala,” Vogue said.

The display will feature approximately 250 items from The Costume Institute’s permanent collection. Many of the pieces are too fragile to ever be worn again.

The pieces are all rendered using elements such as AI, GCI and more, while themes such as land, sea and sky are played out.

“It is very much an ode to nature and the emotional poetics of fashion,” says Andrew Bolton, Wendy Yu Curator responsible for The Costume Institute, about the upcoming exhibition.

“One thing I hope this show will activate is the sensory appreciation of fashion.”

Guests expected to attend include the Kardashians, Blake Lively, Hailey Bieber, Sarah Jessica Parker and Timothee Chalamet.

Gwendoline Christie, La La Anthony and Ashley Graham will host, while YouTuber Emma Chamberlain is expected to interview stars on the red carpet.
