Luxury Mercedes-Benz cars – including $400,000 AMG GT – urgently recalled over fault that could see the vehicle suddenly burst into flames

Transport safety officials have issued an urgent recall for almost 2,000 Mercedes-Benz vehicles, warning that a manufacturing defect in some of the luxury brand’s models poses a serious safety risk to road users.

Certain of the company’s AMG GT, C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, SL, CLE, EQE and EQS models were recalled on Monday after the discovery of a manufacturing defect.

“Vehicle management systems connected to the fuse box may malfunction,” the Australian Department of Transport said in its recall warning.

‘If this happens, it could result in sudden loss of motive power and/or vehicle fire.

‘A sudden loss of traction while driving, or a vehicle fire, can increase the potential risk of an accident, causing serious injury or death to the vehicle occupants, other road users, bystanders and damage to property.’

The annual range for 1,983 affected vehicles is 2023-2024.

Consumers are advised to check their vehicle identification number to see if they are affected and, if so, contact the nearest authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer to have the fuse box replaced.

The replacement will be free.

Mercedes-Benz is a leading luxury brand and its S-Class sedans have become the symbol of the luxury driving experience, with the sophisticated cars selling for more than $200,000.
