Melissa Barrera has been let go from the film by the production company Spyglass due to her criticism of Israel in the ongoing war with Hamas on social media.

The Monterrey, Mexico-born actress, 33, was “quietly dropped” from the horror film’s cast, a source said Variety On Tuesday, she made several posts since Hamas militants stormed the Supernova music festival on October 7, starting the ongoing military conflict.

Barrera, who played Sam Carpenter in this year’s Scream VI and last year’s Scream, had labeled Israel a “colonized” country and posted content with an anti-Semitic trope about Jewish people controlling the media.

Barrera, who has also appeared in films such as In the Heights, Carmen and the upcoming Bed Rest, posted a statement saying: “Western media only shows the (Israeli) side. Why do they do that, I’ll let you figure it out for yourself.’

According to The Hollywood ReporterBarrera said in another post on Instagram Stories that “Gaza is currently being treated like a concentration camp.”

She added: “Putting everyone together, without anywhere to go, without electricity and water… People have learned nothing from our history.

‘And just like in our history, people still quietly watch it all happen. THIS IS GENOCIDE AND ETHNIC CLEANSING.”

Barrera posted a number of war-related clips to her Instagram Stories on Monday, including footage of US-Israeli forces in Gaza; demonstrations in favor of a ceasefire in Philadelphia; and Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib called for an immediate ceasefire.

Barrera played a key role in both hit horror films, as 2022’s Scream earned $137.7 million in box office revenue worldwide, while Scream V, released last March, raked in a total of $168.9.

A number of Barerra’s fans chimed in in the comments section of a post she made on September 16, supporting her amid news of her scuttling Scream role.

One fan said: ‘We stand with you queen and we will boycott scream 7.’

Another fan commented, “Thank you for being brave enough to care! I know I and others will continue to support you!’

One fan said: ‘Please tell me it’s not true that you’re being let go from Scream VII? How could they let you go because you called for a ceasefire?’

Christopher Landon will direct the film, which has not yet begun production, THR reports. Paramount is expected to distribute the film.

The film’s development was “slow amid the actors’ and writers’ strikes,” the newspaper said.
