Fitzroy, Melbourne: Woman allegedly KIDNAPS a five-year-old girl from a primary school

A woman has been charged after allegedly kidnapping a child from a Melbourne primary school on Friday morning.

Police allege the woman, 35, walked into Fitzroy Primary School on George Street in inner Fitzroy and abducted a five-year-old girl at around 9am.

She walked with the child to Atherton Gardens on Brunswick Street, a distance of about 600 metres.

They were spotted by a bystander, who called police around 9:40 a.m., detectives said.

The woman was arrested without incident.

The child suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital in a stable condition for examination.

The primary school immediately called the police when it was informed of the “disturbing incident”, according to a spokesperson for the Ministry of Education.

The woman, who has no fixed address, has been charged with child theft and will appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court this evening.
