Melbourne wedding reception pauses to celebrate Australia’s World Cup win over France, with the Matildas calling it ‘an evening to remember’ in more ways
Football-crazy guests at a wedding in Melbourne on Saturday interrupted their wedding celebrations to enjoy Australia’s harrowing World Cup victory over France.
A TikTok user with the account Belle & Bruce uploaded a clip showing a reception where numerous fans gathered around a phone seconds before Cortnee Vine went home what turned out to be the winner in the Brisbane penalty shootout.
Euphoric scenes followed as Australia progressed to the semi-finals, where they will face England on Wednesday evening in Sydney.
The video – with its accompanying caption – ‘POV: You’re at the most beautiful wedding and the Matildas are through to the semi-finals of the World Cup’ caught the attention of the Australian social media team.
They responded with: ‘An evening to remember! — and the video has since been viewed nearly 40,000 times online.

Australia has officially been whipped up by World Cup fever, as the country looks set to win the tournament on home soil.
Hero of the hour Vine believes the world game is finally about to kick off on local shores.
“We are a football nation,” she said full-time. “The Australian public has really embraced us, it’s great.”
And despite being well aware that beating the Lionesses at Stadium Australia will send fans into a frenzy, Tony Gustavsson’s side are determined to maintain their collective focus.
“We know we can make it to the final,” said veteran goalkeeper Lydia Williams.
