Melbourne tram commuters continue to ‘cough and cry’ after a mysterious woman boarded and sprayed an unknown substance

  • A woman sprayed an aerosol can into the Melbourne tram
  • The tram was evacuated at the next stop

Police are investigating after a strange incident resulted in the evacuation of a Melbourne tram.

About 60 people were boarding the tram on the Bourke St Mall at 2:20pm Friday when an unidentified woman entered and sprayed an ‘unknown substance’ before leaving.

The tram was evacuated at the next stop when firefighters boarded before determining the substance was not harmful.

Witnesses to the emergency response said passengers on board coughed and cried, leading to speculation that the aerosol was pepper spray.

“When I turned around, the door closed and someone was spraying,” Jackie He told 7NEWS.

“They said it was pepper spray and it felt spicy, and everyone started coughing.”

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said a baby and her 31-year-old mother were assessed at the scene but not taken to hospital.

“It is believed an unknown woman entered the tram on Bourke Street before spraying the unknown substance into the air from an aerosol,” she said.

“The circumstances of the incident are yet to be determined and an investigation is ongoing.

“Anyone with information or CCTV footage is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.”
