Melbourne has been placed on high alert for a severe thunderstorm to hit the city, bringing heavy rainfall.
The BOM issued a warning at 2:39 p.m. Monday that severe, slow-moving thunderstorms had been detected on weather radar near Essendon and Footscray in the north of the city.
Storms are expected to hit Broadmeadows, Coburg and Fawkner at 3:10 p.m. and Craigieburn and Tullamarine at 3:40 p.m., the warning said.
“Heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding is likely,” a statement said.

Severe thunderstorm warnings have also been issued for those living in central and eastern Gippsland.
Those in the areas have been told to brace themselves for heavy rains with possible flooding.
