Terrifying images have emerged of a horror stabbing that unfolded on a busy street.

CCTV footage shows a man wearing a lime green hoodie and dark-coloured cargo trousers running after a 24-year-old man and stabbing him in the leg before running away.

The incident outside a fast food restaurant on King Street in Melbourne's CBD is believed to be the second in a series of “random” knife attacks across the city on Saturday, which left one woman fighting for her life and four others injured.

The man in the video can be heard screaming in pain before shouting “Ambulance please.”

A passerby took off his shirt and wrapped it around the wound in an attempt to stop the bleeding.

A 31-year-old Melton man has been arrested over the spate of attacks.

Police suspect he had a 'bag of knives' with him.

On Sunday he was charged with 14 assault-related charges, including two counts of intentionally causing serious injury under circumstances of brute force.

He faces two counts of recklessly causing serious injury under circumstances of brute force, five counts of intentionally causing injury and five counts of recklessly causing injury.

The man has also been charged with possession of controlled weapons.

Detective Inspector Andrew Eyries of Victoria Police said the alleged attacker likely used different types of knives in each separate attack during the attack.

He said the man allegedly shot at defenseless victims from behind in what police called a series of “cowardly” attacks.

“These people were minding their own business, it's extremely concerning,” he said.

The first stabbing took place in Southbank at around 9.20pm when a man, 28, was stabbed in the torso and leg.

Forty minutes later the 24-year-old man is stabbed in King Street.

It is believed the alleged perpetrator then used public transport to travel to the south-east of the city, where he approached a couple on Dandenong Road at around 11pm.

A 31-year-old woman from St Kilda East was stabbed multiple times and rushed to hospital in a serious condition.

The 31-year-old Waverly man who accompanied her suffered a number of injuries, including a significant laceration to his arm.

The fifth person attacked was a 31-year-old British man in Acland Street in St Kilda at around 12.30pm on Sunday.

He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries to his leg.

Extensive police resources were deployed to identify the suspected perpetrator followed to Balaclava Station.

The man tried to flee on foot before capsicum spray was used.

Sergeant Eyries said police had taken the man into custody and he would be medically examined prior to questioning.

Police believe there is no link to terrorism, with Sergeant Eyries adding he did not know the motive behind the attacks.

Following a rise in sharp gun-related crime in Melbourne, Sergeant Eyries said the public should have “confidence in the police”.

The use of everyday weapons found in “every kitchen” during last night's attacks has concerned Victoria Police as they look to stamp out violent crime.
