A speed camera operator has narrowly avoided serious injury after he and his vehicle were allegedly attacked by a group of men.

The five offenders are said to have jumped on the speed camera vehicle while it was parked on Nicholson St in Coburg in Melbourne's north early on Friday morning.

The group reportedly threw items at the car and broke several windows before fleeing the scene.

Photos of the car afterwards showed extensive damage to the shattered front and rear windows.

The 36-year-old speed cameraman from St Albans managed to drive away despite being injured in the terrifying attack.

He was treated for minor cuts.

Victoria Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

No arrests or charges have been filed yet.

It comes at a time when tensions continue to rise between speed camera operator Serco and the workers' union.

More than 1,500 hours of work have been lost to strikes as workers negotiate wage increases and improved safety conditions after a wave of recent attacks.

Serco workers have been ordered to stop for two hours on Friday and Saturday, ahead of an eight-hour strike on Sunday.

Anyone who witnessed or has footage of Friday morning's incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers.
