Melbourne protest: Violence breaks out in CBD during anti-trans demonstration as police battle to control opposing groups and shocked diners watch on

Violent scenes broke out between members of an anti-trans demonstration and counter-protesters in Melbourne’s CBD.

About 100 people turned up for the #WomenWillSpeak rally, held by the Women’s Action Group, before members clashed with pro-transgender activists on Spring Street at around 1pm on Saturday.

The scenes quickly began to escalate as pro-trans supporters tried to push through a police line with megaphones.

At least two protesters were knocked to the ground by officers before pepper spray was deployed.

In images captured by the Herald Sunshocked diners sat front row for a heated brawl outside The Cricketer’s Bar at the Hotel Windsor between a women’s rights supporter, dressed in all black and sunglasses, and a group of protesters.

The man, who was allegedly antagonizing transgender supporters, is seen shoving the activists before grabbing one by the throat and slamming them into the wall.

“F****ng kill yourself, f****ng kill yourself,” one protester can be heard shouting.

Multiple objects such as a camera tripod, an umbrella and cardboard plates were used as improvised weapons.

Video footage near parliament showed police trying to subdue demonstrators with pepper spray in wild scenes.

The action group Melbourne Activist Legal Support had legal observers on site.

A Victoria Police spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia they were unhappy with the violence that broke out at the weekend gathering.

“Victoria Police are disappointed with the behavior of many who attended a demonstration in the city today,” a police spokesperson said.

“Our members were confronted by hostile members of the crowd who acted violently against the police.

“We have a long history of supporting peaceful protest, but will not tolerate outrageous and unlawful behavior,” she added.

The statement said Victoria Police had prepared a “significant presence” for the protest of an estimated 100 people.

It confirmed that OC Spray was deployed when members of the group attempted to break the police line.

“Two women in their 20s were arrested at the scene and are expected to be charged on summons,” the spokesperson added.

‘As per standard procedure, available footage will be reviewed to identify any further violations.’

Anyone who has witnessed unlawful conduct, or has footage or other information that could assist police, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or file a report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
