A shocked onlooker captured the moment a large truck rear-ended a car while traveling at high speed on a major highway.
Courtney, who was driving another car along Melbourne’s Monash Freeway this week, said she saw the van drive behind a “small” car.
Her husband filmed the ‘terrifying’ scene from their passenger seat as the truck crashed into the car – apparently just inches behind.
The couple’s daughter in the backseat asked what the truck was doing.
“It’s way too close to that car,” Courtney told her.
A driver on Melbourne’s Monash Freeway filmed one of the ‘worst examples of tailgating’ she’d ever seen this week
The truck was less than a meter from the back of the car in front of it as the two traveled about 60 miles (98 km) for over a mile
The mother appeared Jacqui Felgate’s 3AW radio show to talk about the nerve-wracking moment Thursday.
“There was only three feet between the truck and the car, so it was quite intimidating,” said Courtney.
The tailgating continued for about a mile along the highway with both vehicles traveling at 60 miles per hour.
Ms Felgate noted that at one point in the footage a ‘no trucks in right lane’ sign was clearly visible next to the truck.
Courtney said the truck tried to leave the right lane but couldn’t because it was “caught between another car.”
The tailgating ended when the truck cut off the car on the left and continued down the highway.
According to Courtney, tailgating happens “a lot” in the area, but this incident was one of the “worst examples” she had ever seen.
“The Monash is quite hectic but it was quite bumper to bumper,” said Courtney.
