Melbourne man with DANOUT numberplates attacking Dan Andrews loses VicRoads appeal
New twist in case of tradie’s personalized ‘DANOUT’ number plates protesting Daniel Andrews as motorist threatened with having his registration revoked
- VicRoads canceled DANOUT number plates
- Peter Dunlevie appealed, but lost
- Would lose vehicle reg if he didn’t return them
A Melbourne motorist, famous for his personalized number plates who brutally smacked Victorian Prime Minister Daniel Andrews, has reluctantly returned them so he can stay behind the wheel.
Tradie Peter Dunlevie was shocked when he received a letter six months ago from VicRoads saying his DANOUT plates he had already paid for and registered for his 2003 Holden Commodore were “abusive” and inappropriate.
The plates were canceled just days after the Victorian state election, where Mr Andrews won a third consecutive term despite six lockdowns amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Mr Dunlevie appealed the decision and hoped to keep his beloved number plates, which have received a lot of attention and support.
Those hopes were dashed when Mr Dunlevie recently lost his appeal and was told he had until Monday to hand over the number plates to VicRoads or his vehicle registration would be suspended and cancelled.

“I thought I was home and hosed down,” Mr Dunlevie told 3AW on Friday.
“Don’t worry, I’ll think of something else!”
Radio host Tom Elliott read out the recent VicRoads letter, which said the license plates “contain a negative and/or inappropriate social message deemed inappropriate to be displayed.”
Mr Dunlevie argued that the number plates were not offensive and that VicRoads was the only one who had a problem with them.
“When I applied for the license plates, my wife Caroline told me I was crackers and someone would damage my car or I would run off the road,” said the father-of-two.
‘I had none of that. All I’ve had is a thumbs up.
‘While I was at Bunnings a few weeks ago a man wanted a picture of my number plates so he could send it to his wife because she hates him (the Prime Minister).
“A guy from AGL wanted a picture because his boss hates Andrews.”

When asked if he was trying to argue that DANOUT was a French term, Mr Dunlevie quipped, ‘Did you see the stickers on the back of my car that Andrews wraps? I would never get away with it.’
Mr Dunlevie returned his number plates on Thursday but warned his stoush with VicRoads was only ‘a little’ over.
He still has his RUDDUD plates registered in 2008, which was a brutal dig at former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.
Those plates remain registered to this day.
Peter is not the only motorist to express his feelings about the prime minister.
Photos of the offending plates on a Holden Commodore plastered with Sack Daniel Andrews and save Victoria stickers circulated in Melbourne in 2022.
“The perfect license plate doesn’t expire… oh wait. F*** GOLD!’ posted a Victorian crime Facebook page.
