A Victorian political candidate made an extraordinary blunder in a recent campaign ad, referring to her community achievements as “X and Y.”

Mia Shaw, who will be a Liberal in the Labor stronghold of Werribee, south-east Melbourne, boasted in a recent brochure about her connection to the area.

“It is an honor and responsibility to be your local councilor which I take very seriously,” she said.

“I’m proud to have made some positive changes for our local community, including X and Y.”

The typo caught the attention of many, including rival MP, Veterans Secretary Shaun Leane, who poked fun at the error on Twitter.

“It’s time someone took up X and Y,” Mr Leane tweeted.

Ms Shaw admitted the mistake on Tuesday, before saying she’s “tired of grubby politics.”

“So the first drop of my brochure, which many people would have received, contained an error,” she wrote on Facebook.

And now it looks like Shaun Leane has decided to put it on Twitter to try and embarrass me, and no doubt derail my campaign to try and take Werribee’s chair from his colleague Tim Pallas.

“This isn’t the kind of campaign I’m going to run. I’m tired of dirty politics and politicians who don’t focus on the things that really matter.

“It’s a shame that a mistake was made and I’m not going to go into the reason why this happened. It’s done and a new DL is being reprinted and will be released this weekend along with some other exciting information for Werribee.”

Ms. Shaw then went into what the X and Y meant – her performance at Wyndham Council.

She said the ‘X’ was $12 million in funding for the Wyndham Parks program, including upgrading “more than 200 local parks.”

the ‘Y’ backed her support for a $5 million support program to help local businesses and households affected by Covid-19.

The gaffe was even featured on the Victorian Labor Party’s Facebook page.

“The Liberals will supply X and Y. Labor will deliver the things that matter,” they captioned a screenshot of the brochure.

Many other Victorians took the opportunity to fool Mrs. Shaw.

“I actually feel like Labor isn’t paying enough attention to X and Y, there hasn’t been enough X and Y in the last 10 years and it’s all Labour’s fault!” a comment.

“This isn’t very inclusive…and the rest of the alphabet,” another joked.

Pallas has held the seat in south-west Melbourne since 2014 and won more than 45 percent of the vote in 2018.

Polls show that Dan Andrews’ Labor government has a strong preference for winning the Victorian election for the third time in a row on November 26.
