Melbourne hospital evacuated after electrical fire

A fire has led to the emergency evacuation of the women’s and children’s ward at Sunshine Hospital in Melbourne, in the city’s west.

Victoria Fire Department was called to the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital in the Sunshine State about 9.30am on Sunday after reports of a fire.

“22 women and 12 infants were safely transferred to other areas of the hospital,” Western Health Chief Operating Officer John Ferraro said.

There were no injuries to patients or staff.

‘This will not affect hospital services, including maternity care, or women who wish to give birth in hospital in the coming days.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation but is not considered suspicious.”

The fire was extinguished within five minutes and 19 firefighters attended.

The fire brigade remained on site to ventilate the room because smoke was developing.

Worksafe Victoria, Energy Safe Victoria and Maribyrnong Council’s health inspector have been notified of the incident.
