A head-on collision in Melbourne’s north has caused chaos for commuters during the morning rush hour.

Two cars collided near College Crescent near Parkville at 6am on Thursday morning.

All westbound lanes along Cemetery Road were closed before reopening an hour later.

Traffic is backed up on the Eastern Freeway and drivers should expect delays of up to 40 minutes.

Motorists are advised to use Flemington Road and Grattan Street to bypass Parkville.

Nicholson Street, to the south, or Brunswick Road, to the north, have been identified as alternative routes.

The condition of the motorists involved in the accident is not yet known.
