A father reunited with his young son urged parents not to make the same mistake he made after a thief left with the two-year-old asleep in the back of his car as he ran to a store.

The man, who did not want to be named, briefly left the car and went into a shop on Nepean Highway in Chelsea, south-east Melbourne, at 4pm on Sunday.

Deciding not to disturb his sleeping son, he left him inside the air-conditioned Volkswagen SUV with the engine still running while he went into the store to buy an ice cream.

A thief jumped into the car a few seconds after the father left and sped off with the child still inside.
