Melbourne diner is left aghast by cost of classic pub dish: ‘Obscene prices’

A diner is shocked by the cost of fish and chips and orange juice at a trendy beachside eatery.

The Melbourne man shared a photo of the meal he bought at Republica restaurant in St Kilda on Monday.

“Fish and chips and a drink cost me $40,” he said.

‘I knew St. Kilda would be more expensive because it’s a tourist area, but WTF. Fish was all batter too.”

The restaurant’s menu lists a price tag of $34 for beer-battered hake and fries and $5.50 for orange juice.

Social media users were disgusted by the exorbitant price.

‘Obscene prices for mediocre food. Sounds like St Kilda waterfront,” one person wrote.

‘It’s getting out of hand. Jesus,” said another.

“Yes, a bloody robbery,” another added.

Some argued that the price was justified because beachfront locations typically have very high rental prices.

‘A lot is paid for the location. Renting on the waterfront would be very expensive, someone said.

“To be fair, you sat down and ordered a main meal at a beachside restaurant and not the local RSL, or even a fish and chip shop,” another agreed.

‘The area has a high customer turnover and locals can afford the prices as they are willing to pay to live in the area. There’s nothing wrong with it, but I can’t complain,” said a third.

Some commenters were less interested in the price than the order.

“Orange juice with fish and chips, I have never seen this on this green earth in almost forty years,” one person wrote.

“Who wants orange juice with fish?” another wondered.

Market research has shown that the high cost of living has caused many people to cut back on eating out as they look to reduce their spending by 2025.

A Compare the Market survey found that a reduction in takeaway meals, holidays, streaming services and morning coffee was on the agenda for many as they wanted to save money.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Republica for comment.
