The assault comes a week after 18-year-old Hashim Mohamed was killed in a brutal knife attack in St Kilda.

Following the teen’s death, African leader Hanad Hersi said the streets of Melbourne were “full of blood”.

“We really need to start asking really hard questions about what’s really going on,” Hersi said.

‘What is happening to our youth? When did this level of violence start to be okay?

‘When was it okay to take a life? They are children, being killed for what? Our little children drop like flies.

Police have yet to charge anyone in the deadly attack.

Youth gangs remain a main focal point of the Victoria Police, with a crackdown on gang crime ongoing.

From November 24 to 27, as part of Operation Alliance, Victoria Police arrested more than 30 young gang members in the Melbourne metropolitan area.

The police launched Operation Alianza in September 2020, a state operation aimed at disrupting and dismantling youth gangs.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Mark Galliott said collaborative efforts by law enforcement are breaking the cycle of recidivism.

“We will maintain a concentrated and combined focus on those who seek to commit violent crimes and endanger the safety of the rest of the community,” he said.

“However, we know that arrests and court hearings are only one strategy to reduce juvenile delinquency and that the police also play a role in breaking the cycle of recidivism and diverting these people from a life of crime.

“In a welcome sign, we continue to see increased compliance with bail conditions by those connected to youth gangs, which is a positive behavior change.”
