A wild fight between police and two women broke out in central Melbourne in the early hours of the new year as a rowdy crowd looked on.
A stunning video shows the chaotic scenes at the Flinders St end of Elizabeth St in the CBD at 2:20am on Sunday morning.
A blonde woman in a white dress is seen fighting with two officers and trying to break them loose with brutal punches and even kicks.
Police were involved in a wild brawl that broke out in central Melbourne in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
A woman was left on the ground after police used her ponytail to drag her down.
Another woman tries to intervene, but is quickly thrown to the ground by two other officers.
One of the officers who is struggling with the blonde woman grabs her by the ponytail to drag her to the ground and from the prone position he attacks again with another kick.
More officers charge to turn the woman face down before the officers handcuff the woman’s arms behind her back.
Then a girl, who appears to be in her late teens, tries to get involved in the melee, but is pushed off by an officer.
A large number of spectators watched the fight unfold near Melbourne’s iconic Flinders St station.
Another officer pushes the girl further.
She begins to protest with a man in a black T-shirt aggressively advancing, yelling and wildly twirling a black article of clothing.
An officer stops both the girl and the man from getting involved, but makes several feints to rush the officer before he quickly retreats.
A large and noisy crowd watches the show from the vantage point of the tram platform and behind a barrier.
The other woman is seen being arrested as she is led away.
Two officers pick up the uncooperative blonde woman by lifting her under the arms.
Another woman tried to intervene while the blonde woman punched and kicked the officers.
The woman refuses to walk, raising her legs, forcing the officers to awkwardly carry her a few wobbly steps.
Eventually, the woman begins to walk away as the man in the black T-shirt continues to walk near the scene in an agitated manner with another man apparently trying to calm him down.
Victoria Police did not confirm the specific incident, but reported that “there were numerous incidents in the Melbourne CBD on New Year’s Eve.”
Overall, police made 49 arrests at night, with 19 for being drunk in a public place and 10 people arrested for assault, fighting or robbery.
A girl was also involved in the incident, but officers pulled her away from the fight.
