Manhunt in Melbourne after innocent man killed in Burwood crash

A man has died after being hit by a stolen car. Two teenage girls have been arrested and police are searching for a group of boys who fled a horrific accident.

A black SUV collided with a silver sedan at the intersection of Warrigal Road and Highbury Road in Burwood, Melbourne’s east, around 7pm on Tuesday.

The male driver of the sedan, whose identity has not yet been officially established, died at the scene.

His car was a total loss and ended up in the front yard of a house on the corner.

The stolen SUV drove a short distance further and then crashed into a tree.

Two 15-year-old girls were arrested at the scene and taken to hospital, where they remained under police guard on Wednesday.

Several men in the car are said to have fled on foot. The police launched a major manhunt on Tuesday evening.

The highway patrol, dog squad and public order team were deployed in the search, while detectives from Major Collision examined the crime scene.

Victoria Police are hoping the two teenage girls can provide information about the men who fled the scene.

“The exact circumstances surrounding the accident are yet to be determined and police have cordoned off the area,” police said in a statement on Tuesday.
