Melania Trump reveals she told Donald to stop strict child immigration policy and finally explains the ‘I really don’t care’ jacket in explosive new memoir
Former First Lady Melania Trump claims she forced her husband Donald to drop his harsh immigration policies that separated children from their parents in the latest revelation from her new book.
The policy caused an international outcry in 2018 while her husband was president, but the ex-first lady wrote that she forced him to stop it.
“This has got to stop,” the former first lady said, which she immediately told her husband. She wrote that she “highlighted the trauma it caused these families” and he “assured her” he would investigate before announcing the end of the policy on June 20, 2018.
Her account of the events is included in her new memoir to be released next week, but excerpts about her views on immigration and her intervention were reported Thursday by the Guardian.
She called the family separations “unacceptable.”

In the book, Trump wrote about the children being held “in overcrowded detention centers and in absolute squalor…raising serious questions about their health and well-being.”
She continued: “The lack of a clear plan for reuniting families and the absence of a definitive policy on these separations has only increased public outrage. I had a strong feeling that the situation required urgent attention and action.”
Trump himself is an immigrant who came to the US from Slovenia and became a US citizen in 2006.
‘I sympathize with everyone who wants to find a better life in this country. As an immigrant, I fully understand the necessary but difficult process of becoming a legal American,” she wrote of her approach to her husband.
About immigration she wrote: ‘Given my past experiences with unfair media stories, I always approached the news with some skepticism. Before discussing the border crisis with him, I thoroughly informed myself about the situation.”
When Trump made a surprise visit in June 2018 to meet with migrant children separated from their parents, she caused a frenzy when she wore a jacket with the message “I really don’t care.” Do you?’
It caused an avalanche of criticism as she left the world wondering what she meant by it. She discusses the controversial clothing in her book.
Former First Lady Melania Trump sparked controversy when she wore a jacket with the message “I really don’t care.” You too?’ when she went to visit migrant children at the US-Mexico border in June 2018. She now claims the message was aimed at the media
Trump describes the message as “discreet yet impactful” and claims it was intended to protest anonymous reporting.
“I was determined… not to let the media’s false narratives influence my mission to help the children and families at the border,” she wrote.
“I even decided to let them know that their criticism would never stop me from doing what I believe is right. To drive the point home, I was wearing a certain jacket when I boarded the plane, a jacket that quickly became famous,” she added.
Trump Recounts How When the Plane Door Closed, Her Press Secretary’s Inbox Became ‘flooded with urgent emails from leading media about the jacket.’
“It’s a message to the media,” I said, “to let them know I wasn’t concerned about their opinion of me.” [but] she told me I couldn’t say that. ‘Why not? It’s the truth.’ Trump wrote about their altercation.
“I disagreed with her insistence that I couldn’t say that,” Trump wrote. “She ignored my comments and told a CNN reporter she was friends with that it was just a jacket, a fashion choice with no underlying message.”
Trump wrote that the frenzy over the jacket “overshadowed the best interests of the children, the border and policy change.” She called it ‘just another example of the media’s irresponsible behavior.’
Her then-press secretary, Stephanie Grisham, disputed Trump’s account that the jacket was intended to target the media in her own book.
The now Trump critic claimed that when they returned to Washington, DC after the trip, Trump was the one who came up with the idea and told them they were “talking to the damn press.”
Former first lady Melania Trump also revealed in her upcoming memoir that she is pro-choice. The admission comes as her husband, former President Donald Trump (right), is widely credited with the erosion of abortion rights in the United States.
The latest revelations are just the latest in a series of explosive claims uncovered in Trump’s book, which touches on areas where the former first lady disagrees with her husband.
Trump wrote in the abortion memoir that she supports a woman’s right to choose and that she has “carried this belief throughout her adult life.”
