Mel B reveals how fiancé Rory McPhee helped her regain her confidence after years of abuse

Melanie Brown has found comfort and trust in her fiancé Rory McPhee after enduring years of abuse.

In a candid interview with The Daily TelegraphMel B, 48, talked about their unexpected romance.

Despite knowing McPhee as a trusted family friend, their relationship surprised her.

“I’m so much calmer now,” the former Spice Girl told the outlet.

Mel B freed herself from a toxic past, expressing her newfound calmness and the freedom she gained from leaving the abusive relationship.

The singer described the physical and emotional abuse she was subjected to in her critically acclaimed memoir, Brutally Honest.

“I just think getting rid of that toxic relationship, even though we obviously still share a child together, has given me freedom and confidence,” she explained.

She recovered herself and emphasized the importance of honesty and self-acceptance in the healing process.

“I’m so much calmer now,” the former Spice Girl told the outlet. Mel B freed herself from a toxic past, expressing her newfound calmness and the freedom she gained from leaving the abusive relationship.

“I don’t think it’s about being strong, I just don’t lie to myself.

“And you have to go through the guilt, the shame, and the embarrassment to process something like that. I think you never really get over it, it lives next to you because you can’t undo the abuse, you can’t undo the scars or undo what you’ve seen.

“For years I was yelled at, ‘You’re fat, you’re disgusting, you’re ugly’. So that voice is always there, but you have to learn to put it aside through therapy.’

They are believed to be in a relationship since 2018 when they met through mutual friends in Los Angeles, including celebrity makeup artist Renee Camilleri.

“I just think getting rid of that toxic relationship, even though we obviously still share a child together, has just given me the freedom and confidence,” she explained.

Their relationship took a serious turn the following year when Mel returned to Britain for the Spice Girls reunion tour.

It is alleged that Leeds-born hairdresser Rory got down on one knee to propose in November 2022 at the luxury country hotel Cliveden House in Berkshire with a £100,000 ($196,405AUD) diamond ring.

Mel shares eldest daughter Phoenix, 24, with Dutch dancer Jimmy Gulzar, whom she met in 1998 when he was hired as a dancer for a Spice Girls world tour.

The couple became engaged in May 1998, announced her pregnancy a month later, and were married in September in Little Marlow, Buckinghamshire.

Their divorce was finalized in 2000.

Scary Spice is also mother to middle daughter Angel Iris Murphy Brown, 16, who she co-parents with Hollywood actor Eddie Murphy, 62.
