Megyn Kelly claimed on Tuesday that Megan Rapinoe “poisoned” the US women’s national team, with the host saying she will make sure the team loses to “idiots” in the Round of 16.
The USA narrowly advanced to the next round with a 0-0 draw against Portugal, and again most of the starters did not sing the national anthem.
And while Rapinoe wasn’t even among the top 11, Kelly believes the 38-year-old negatively impacted the group’s culture.
“Megan Rapinoe, she is the leader of it all… She is not a starter. So that’s why she’s not on camera when they sing the national anthem, but she’s behind this,” Kelly said while hosting the Megyn Kelly Show.
“She has poisoned the whole team against the country they play for. I don’t know about you, but I don’t support them. I’m not with them. I hope they lose… It’s embarrassing. These girls are embarrassing. They should be ashamed.
Megyn Kelly Thinks Megan Rapinoe ‘Poisoned’ US Women’s National Team
Rapinoe didn’t even start, as the Americans narrowly deserved a draw against Portugal
But her teammates in the starting line-up largely stopped singing the national anthem
Although Rapinoe – who entered Portugal’s draw in the 61st minute – did not start the match, she is at the forefront of social activism when it comes to the US women’s players.
An outspoken voice for LGBTQ+ rights, she also joined then-49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick in 2016 when she knelt during the national anthem. Kaepernick protested against police brutality.
After equally quiet displays against Vietnam and the Netherlands, only three American players – Alex Morgan, Julie Ertz and Lindsey Horan – were seen singing the “Star Spangled Banner” before the game against Portugal.
And Kelly wasn’t happy with that New Zealand showing.
“They won’t put their hands on their hearts,” she said. “They don’t feel proud when they are there, even though they represent the United States of America. Yes, we have some flaws. Yes, there have been some warts, but we are so much more good than bad.
“I mean, they look like they don’t even want to be there. It feels like an inconvenience to represent the US.’
After the game, the team laughed despite the disappointing performance.
Portugal’s Ana Capeta almost sent the US home with an injury time winner, when she hit her shot off the post.
Rapinoe entered the game in the 61st minute with New Zealand drawing 0–0
However, many of her teammates again chose not to pre-sing the national anthem
Nevertheless, Alex Morgan and Trinity Rodman could be seen posing for photos with fans as the side was eager to progress to the next round.
“These idiots on the women’s soccer team continue to embarrass us on the national stage,” Kelly said.
‘They came to a 0-0 draw with Portugal. They only scored four goals in three games. It is the first time ever that the women’s team does not record at least two wins at this stage of the competition. And yet they celebrate as if they just won everything.
After finishing second in Group E, the USA will play against the winners of Group G (probably Sweden) on Sunday.
