The $1.58 billion prize is simply larger than South Carolina’s $1.537 billion Mega Millions win in October 2018, according to lottery officials.
Before Tuesday night, since April 18, no ticket matched all six numbers drawn for nearly four months.

Tuesday night’s jackpot was the third largest in US lottery history.
Mega Millions tickets, which cost $2 each, are sold in all states except Alabama, Utah, Alaska, Hawaii, and Nevada.
The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot were about 1 in 302.6 million. Those odds are worse than the 1 in 11.5 million chance of being bitten by a shark or the 1 in 700,000 chance of giving birth to identical quadruplets.
Although there were no Mega Millions jackpot winners in recent months, the year started with a number of wins.
“This year started with six jackpot winners in less than four months – a number much more typical for an entire year and indicative of the truly random nature of lottery draws,” the lottery said.
There has been a string of recent billion dollar lottery winners, including two separate billion dollar Powerball winning lottery tickets sold in California.
A single lottery ticket matched all six numbers drawn on July 19 — that meant someone had won the third-highest prize ever for the multi-state lottery.
While the winner is known, lottery officials confirmed that the winning ticket was sold by a Los Angeles convenience store just blocks away from the Skid Row homeless camps.
California Lottery officials previously confirmed that Las Palmitas Mini Market was the store where the winning lottery ticket was sold. The owner, Nabor Herrera, also receives a $1 million bonus from Powerball.
Herrera said he didn’t realize he had sold the winning ticket until he arrived at work early Thursday and saw cameras camped out in front of the store, which he initially thought were for a movie scene.
And it was the second time in less than a year that someone from California had found gold. In February, Edwin Castro came forward to claim winnings from November’s $2.04 billion drawing. He chose to take the $997.6 million lump sum.
