Meg sent in a self-tape and the casting directors asked her to audition in person. In June, after several auditions – and beating thousands of other potential Kates – Meg was told she was in the final eight and was invited to a cast read-through at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire.

That reading “was the best day of my life,” she says. “I thought, ‘Even though I don’t get this, I’m just so glad I had this experience.'” Four months later, at 11:11 a.m. on an August day, she got a call from casting associate Kate Bone.

There’s a popular theory that 11:11 is a lucky time and that people make a wish when the clock strikes that time. ‘I don’t know if you believe in that kind of thing,’ says Meg, ‘but it was weird.’

To prepare you for The CrownShe spent hours watching Kate Middleton footage, studying her mannerisms and voice. “I spent so much time ‘with’ her,” she says. “You get this weird parasocial connection.”

It made Meg reconsider her earlier royal ambivalence. ‘She’s so graceful and wonderful and confident. I’ll always love Kate.’

Meg’s research was so ‘always consuming’ that after The Crown After she finished filming, she avoided reading stories about Kate.

“I’ve tried to move on from the character. But of course,” she adds, referring to the Princess of Wales’ cancer diagnosis, “I feel so much for her and the family.”

The Crown has won more Emmys than any other Netflix TV show (21 and counting) and had a sensational budget of £11 million per episode in season five. Meg had daunting preconceptions about the six-month shoot.
