Meet the workers using ChatGPT to take on multiple full-time jobs – and their employers have NO idea

>

Employees have admitted to using ChatGPT – the revolutionary chatbot powered by artificial intelligence (AI) – for multiple full-time jobs.

They call themselves “overworked,” because the tool allows them to complete each job’s workload in at least half the time.

Most of the tasks they perform involve quite a bit of writing, such as creating marketing materials, which the chatbot has proven remarkably adept at.

ChatGPT is a large language model – an AI system trained on massive amounts of text data to generate human-like responses to given prompts.

When it was released for free by start-up OpenAI in December, it opened the public’s eyes to just how powerful the technology has become in recent years.

It was soon used to take exams, deliver a sermon, write software, draft legal documents, and provide relationship advice – just to name a few.

WHAT IS CHATGPT?

ChatGPT is a large language model trained on a massive amount of text data, allowing it to generate eerily human-like text in response to a given prompt

OpenAI says its ChatGPT model is trained using a machine learning technique called Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF).

This can simulate dialogue, answer follow-up questions, admit errors, challenge false premises, and reject inappropriate requests.

It responds to text prompts from users and can be asked to write essays, lyrics for songs, stories, marketing pitches, scripts, letters of complaint, and even poetry.

But almost half a year later, users have become more skilled and can now use ChatGPT to fool their employers into thinking their work has their full attention.

In reality, they have several other employers who think exactly the same.

“ChatGPT likes 80 percent of my job,” said Ben, an overworked employee whose name has been changed Shame.

Ben works in marketing for financial technology companies and first heard of the idea of serving more than one position during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the second half of 2021, reports surfaced of workers taking advantage of the massive shift to remote working to pick up an extra job.

But this was not always out of greed, as many people lacked financial security in the face of massive layoffs and economic uncertainty.

Ben, from Toronto, was unable to join the overworked community at the time because his job was too demanding, but when he discovered ChatGPT, that changed.

He, and many other of his colleagues in the marketing world, were able to use the AI to quickly find specific information, or generate written material that is almost indistinguishable from material written by a human.

After this significantly reduced the amount of time it took to get through his workload, he wondered if he could pick up another job and do the same thing.

Yep, he did just that earlier this year, even using ChatGPT to write his cover letters while applying.

HOW DOES CHATGPT REDUCE AN EMPLOYEE’S WORKLOAD?

  • Generate marketing materials
  • Write code
  • Write programs for Microsoft Excel
  • Transcribe Zoom meetings
  • Write professional human-like messages and emails

To get ChatGPT to write a story for him, he gives it a template and some context as a prompt, and it will generate him the basics of the final product in minutes.

Ben added that the recent release of GPT-4, an even more powerful version of the original, better understands its specific requirements.

“I can just tell it to create a story and it just does it for me based on the context I gave it to,” he told Vice.

The text it generates usually needs some minor tweaking, he added, because it will sometimes make mistakes.

Some employees believe this element will prevent them from losing their jobs entirely to AI, as their expertise is still needed to control what is being generated.

Ben also uses ChatGPT to write messages for his manager, which he says should be in lowercase to make it look like they were typed by a busy worker.

Another employee uses it to transcribe Zoom meetings so they don’t have to pay attention and can review the notes later.

A three-time financial reporter also said he uses it to write programs for Microsoft Excel, cutting processes that would normally take two weeks to just a few hours.

Some tech leaders, such as Elon Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and the late Stephen Hawking, believe the rapid advances in AI pose a “profound risk to society and humanity.”

But others, such as Google CEO Bill Gates and Sundar Pichai, hail it as the “most important” innovation of our time, saying it could solve climate change, cure cancer and boost productivity.

The latter is certainly true for one employee, who told Vice that ChatGPT allowed him to work four jobs simultaneously.

A software engineer currently earns over $500,000 (£400,000) working two jobs with the help of ChatGPT as it helps him write code and cohesive business memos.

To help him achieve his goal of having a net worth of $10 million (£8 million) by the age of 35, he also wants to find a way for a third party to mimic his voice and image so that they can “use my work”. can do for me’. ‘ using ChatGPT.

Tech workers have also said they use the AI to write professional-sounding emails because they “probably aren’t as good at writing stuff as most other people.”

Most of the workers Vice spoke to didn’t believe what they were doing was amoral, compared to people who do one job during the day and another at night.

One of them says he doesn’t trust that he will be ‘rewarded with more pay’ by working harder at one company and that this is a realistic way to generate more income.

But they like to keep their plan a secret for as long as possible, aware that they could take advantage of a brief opportunity.

When their managers understand how an AI – which does not require a salary – can do much of their work, they may inadvertently cut the workforce.

Ryan compared the advancements in technology to the development of the modern loom, telling Vice, “It’s going to be one loom operator, instead of, you know, 100 weavers.”

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are certainly impressive in their ability to perform complicated tasks that were once thought to be only suitable for humans.

The revolutionary ChatGPT has been used to take exams, deliver a sermon, write software, and provide relationship advice – just to name a few features.

But for some people, these technologies have raised a scary question: Can they take over my job?

A study from Princeton University in New Jersey, USA, has revealed the 20 professions most at risk of being laid off due to AI.
