Meet Australia’s youngest billionaires – as their remarkable journeys to wealth are revealed

Gina Rinehart’s youngest daughter and Canva co-founder Melanie Perkins share the title of Australia’s youngest billionaires, new data shows.

The mining magnate, who inherited millions from her father Lang Hancock, has four children who each occupy a list of the ten youngest Australian billionaires.

The Rinehart siblings, aged 36 to 47, each inherited billions from a trust that owns a quarter of the shares in the family mining company Hancock Prospecting.

Ginia Rinehart, 36, is the youngest of the Rinehart brood, with a net worth of $5.59 billion.

She is followed by sisters Hope Welker, 37, and Bianca Rinehart, 46, and their brother, John Hancock, 47, each with a net worth of $3.1 billion.

In addition to being a beneficiary, John is also a senior advisor to Lind Partners LLC and manages his own private investment fund.

The Rinehart siblings are the only non-self-made billionaires in the top 10.

Ms Perkins, who co-founded graphic design platform Canva with her partner Cliff Obrecht, 37, and Cameron Adams, 43, shares the title of youngest Australian billionaire with Ginia Rinehart.

Both Mrs. Perkins and Mr. Adams have a net worth of $5.59 billion.

Mrs. Perkins is the 836th richest billionaire in the world according to Forbes.

The couple owns an 18 percent stake in Canva, which is estimated to be worth a whopping $62 billion by September 2021.

Mr. Cannon-Brookes is ranked No. 151 on Forbes’ Rich List and is the richest in the top ten

Atlassian co-founders Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar, both 43, are collectively the fifth-youngest Australian billionaires.

Mr. Cannon-Brookes is ranked No. 151 on Forbes’ Rich List and is the richest in the top ten, with a net worth of $17.8 billion, while Mr. Farquhar is worth $17.4 billion.

Mr. Cannon-Brookes’ wealth also stems from his 11.3 per cent stake in Australia’s largest energy producer, AGL Energy.

The billionaire also has a minority stake in the Utah Jazz NBA team. He became Australia’s first basketball team owner in 2020.

Mr. Cannon-Brookes also acquired the Sun Cable development, which plans to deliver 1.8 gigawatts of solar energy from Australia to Singapore.

Mr. Cannon-Brookes and Mr. Farquhar are the only billionaires in the top ten with ties to public companies. Atlassian went public in 2015.

Cameron Adams, 43, co-founder and chief product officer of Canva, was also on the list, with a net worth of $2.7 billion.

Nigel Austin, 52, founder and majority owner of the Cotton On apparel and stationery group, is worth $2.1 billion.

The research shows that the software sector produces the most billionaires under the age of 45, with 50 percent of the top ten coming from this sector.

New research from City index use data from Forbes to break down the number of billionaires around the world by age, sector and wealth to determine the youngest billionaires in each country.

Of the ten youngest billionaires in Australia, 60 percent are male and 60 percent are self-made. Female billionaires are on average younger and wealthier than men.

The average age of a female Australian billionaire is 53, younger than the average age of the Australian male billionaire, 70.

The average net worth of a female Australian billionaire is $7.6 billion, more than that of male Australian billionaires, worth $6.1 billion.
