A friend has been verbally abused on social media after an honest but strange request in a Facebook group.
The woman from Victoria loves to buy makeup in Mecca, but she doesn’t want her partner to find out about any purchases – so she reached out to others online for help.
“Okay girls I need help, can someone inbox me like I won a birthday mystery box from Mecca so I don’t have to explain it to my partner?” she wrote.
But the comment was taken seriously by nearly 500 people, and some considered it a “red flag” in a relationship.

“This is a giant red flag. If you lie about purchases to your partner, you either need to reevaluate your relationship with money, your partner, or both,” one woman wrote.
Another said, “I understand this is probably just a joke, but in all seriousness, you shouldn’t be hiding what you’re buying from your partner.”
“Why do you have to do this?” asked a third.
The friend came to her own defense and responded to the nasty comments.
“God girls chill out, at first my partner wouldn’t care if I brought it. It’s just so much nicer to say I won something so I can say I won again in a few days,” she wrote.

Despite the resistance, other women admitted that they too have found creative ways to avoid telling their partners they bought something in Mecca.
“Sometimes I write thank you notes when the service offers ‘add a message’ or congratulate myself from any IG page (Instagram) and pretend I won and then show the message as ‘proof’,” admitted one woman.
‘Why didn’t I think of this? It’s too late now. I already told my husband what I wanted to buy from Mecca. It will be too suspicious if I “won,” wrote another.
“Mecca should make some ‘congratulations on winning the giveaway’ stickers for our boxes,” suggested another.
