Measles alert in Victoria after traveler visits busy Moonee Ponds shopping strip over several days

A measles alert has been issued after a traveler who returned with the disease visited a busy shopping area and used public transport in north Melbourne while infected.

The 41-year-old had been to India and arrived in Melbourne on Monday December 12 on Thai Airways flight TG 465 from Bangkok.

The plane and the international arrivals terminal at Melbourne airport that morning are now exhibition sites.

The traveler then visited a popular shopping area at Moonee Ponds for several days.

Moonee Ponds Central, Woolworths, Aldi, Fresh on Young Greengrocer, and Umiyaki Restaurant are exhibit sites at certain times on December 12 and 13.

Alerts have also been issued for various trains and buses for Monday, Tuesday and Friday of that week.

Anyone who has visited exposure sites and now has symptoms should wear a mask and call a medical facility ahead of time before seeking help.

The first symptoms of measles can seem like a cold and include a runny nose, cough, red eyes, fever, and a rash that often starts on the face before spreading over the entire body.

Six cases have been detected in Victoria since January 2022 in people who were not fully immunized and either returned from abroad or were in contact with others who had been.
