Major breakthrough in Aussie cold case as police swoop over alleged murder of Meaghan Louise Rose almost 30 years after her death

The former partner of Queensland woman Meaghan Louise Rose has been arrested in connection with her alleged murder almost 30 years later.

Keith Lees, 72, was arrested at a house on Kenthurst Road, in Dural in Sydney’s northwest, at 8am on Thursday.

He was taken into custody in Queensland in 1997 on an arrest warrant for an alleged murder, NSW Police said.

Police took him to Hornsby Police Station where he was charged with the outstanding arrest warrant.

NSW Police have also laid new charges against him as they allege he tried to bite an officer while in custody.

He was charged with assaulting a police officer in the execution of his duty without grievous bodily harm, dealing with identifying information to commit an indictable offence, and possessing identifying information to commit an indictable offence.

He was refused bail and will appear in Parramatta Local Court on Friday.

Lees cannot be charged with Ms Rose’s murder in NSW. Queensland police are expected to seek his extradition to face charges there.

The arrest comes 27 years after the body of Meaghan Louise Rose, 25, was found at the foot of a Point Cartwright cliff near Mooloolaba in southern Queensland in July 1997.
