McDonald's Australia has shocked fans by unveiling the brand new sizzling star of its summer menu – and the divisive ingredient is sure to turn heads.

Several pineapple-themed items are hitting Australian stores this week, a summer fruit that thousands of people have called “the most controversial of all time.”

The 'never seen before' snacks include pineapple fritters and a pineapple sundae, which are sure to spark a heated debate among foodies.

The fast food chain revealed it was 'inspired' by last year's special summer menu, the humble potato shell, and decided to go for pineapple slices covered in a crispy fried layer for the New Year.

Foodies can expect the hot and cold treats for a limited time starting January 10.

The beignets are sometimes described as the 'ultimate snack' of the summer.

Those who want a cold treat can purchase a pineapple sundae.

For those who need a quick fix to beat the heat, they can purchase an ice cream sundae covered in pineapple sauce and chunks – with the choice of the iconic vanilla or chocolate soft serve as the base.

Chocolate lovers will be pleased to discover that summer's Tim Tam McFlurry is still available at select locations and drive-thru restaurants.

The Tim Tam dessert comes with a fluffy chocolate cake, Tim Tam chunks and a special custom Tim Tam chocolate sauce.

The restaurant has also unveiled two special summer burgers, the returning Aussie Angus deluxe with beetroot and bacon and the McCrispy bacon deluxe.

McDonalds has also brought back the Aussie Angus deluxe burger.

And introduced the McCrispy bacon deluxe.

McDonalds marketing director Samantha McLeod described the new pineapple-themed menu items as 'the ultimate snack item this year'.

'Whether you want to serve the pineapple hot or cold, we are giving our Macca's fans the opportunity to subject them to the taste test this summer. “We can't wait to hear what our customers think,” she said.

'With an exciting new pineapple snack and dessert, as well as the latest burger spin and the return of an Australian favourite, Macca's is bringing the heat this summer with a menu that promises to deliver great taste and great quality, because nothing goes together better than that of Macca and the Australian summer.'

The items will be available nationwide from January 10.
