Despite their hard efforts, the game ended in heartbreak as the Lionesses were beaten by Spain – despite a sensational penalty save from goalkeeper Mary Earps.

Sarina Wiegman’s side, who inspired millions of fans to tune in across the country, was defeated in Australia by Olga Carmona’s first half.

The Lionesses got a lifeline when Earps made a great stop to deny Jennifer Hermoso from 12 yards out – but her teammates couldn’t find the net on the other side themselves, bringing an unfortunate end to a great tournament that has raised women’s fame football like no other.

Supporters from all over the country poured into pubs, bars and special fan zones for the historic game, supporting the team until the very last kick.

But there were tears of fear rather than joy at the final whistle as Spain were crowned world champions, leaving England wondering what could have happened.

The European champions had started well initially and were only centimeters away from opening the scoring when Lauren Hemp hit the crossbar with a loop.

But as Carmona drilled home just before the half hour mark, the momentum swung towards Spain and they dominated for the rest of the game.

They had a golden opportunity to double their lead when they were awarded a penalty midway through the second half for a handball against Keira Walsh following a lengthy VAR review.

But Earps made a killer save to deny Jennifer Hermoso, before embarking on a passionate celebration that led to cheers from millions of fans watching at home.

Wiegman turned to Lauren James, arguably England’s star of the tournament who missed the last two games through suspension, and European Championship hero Chloe Kelly in the second half, but they couldn’t offer inspiration from the bench.
