Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez share VERY awkward moment after Saudi Arabian GP

‘Did you get the fastest lap in the end?’… ‘On the last lap, yes’: The VERY awkward moment between Max Verstappen and his teammate Sergio Pérez, before the Mexican asked for an ‘information’ review by Red Bull

Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez shared an extremely awkward moment after Sunday’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, despite Red Bull securing their second straight one-two of the season.

With Verstappen starting the race in 15th place after experiencing engine trouble in qualifying on Saturday, Perez made the most of it to claim victory, while his teammate moved ahead to take second.

But Perez was clearly unhappy after finding out that Verstappen had picked up an extra point by posting the fastest lap of the race on the final lap.

‘Did you get the fastest lap at the end?’ Perez asked Verstappen.

The Dutchman looked a bit embarrassed as he replied: ‘On the last lap, yes.’

However, he was far from happy after finding out that his teammate Max Verstappen had set the fastest lap right at the end of the race.

There were then several seconds of silence with both men avoiding eye contact before Pérez questioned his teammate about the race strategy given to him by the team.

Perez asked: ‘Didn’t they tell you to keep up?’

‘Oh, 33.0, yes. But then I asked what the fastest lap was and I think it was a tenth faster than what we were doing,” Verstappen explained.

Verstappen now leads the standings by one point courtesy of setting the fastest lap in Jeddah, leaving Perez frustrated by Red Bull’s instructions.

The Mexican called for a review of the information given to both drivers during the races, and the early stages of the season indicate that it could be a direct battle between him and Verstappen for this year’s title.

“I asked for two laps to go when they told me to keep a certain rhythm,” Perez told reporters.

‘I was told I had the fastest lap and to keep up at a certain pace. I thought the communication was the same for Max.

“I think we need to review the different information and in the end I couldn’t push.”
