Max George opens up on spur-of-the-moment ‘engagement’ to Maisie Smith

EXCLUSIVE: Max George opens up about his shocking spontaneous ‘engagement’ to Maisie Smith

Max George has opened up about his impromptu ‘engagement’ to Maisie Smith.

The Wanted singer, 34, left his girlfriend, 21, totally baffled in April when he publicly ‘proposed’ while filming ITV’s The Chase Celebrity Special.

And in an upcoming clip from Thursday’s episode of Iain Stirling’s CelebAbility, obtained exclusively by MailOnline, Max recalled almost proposing.

The pop star admitted that he’s glad his proposal to actress Maisie wasn’t real as he revealed her true reaction off-camera.

Max confessed that while his girlfriend pretended to be excited and emotional at the sight of her partner getting down on one knee, in reality she was unimpressed.

Iain said, “Last time you were on a game show, you proposed to your girlfriend Maisie. Why did you do that? I thought it was real. Were you on The Chase?’

Max admitted: ‘Yes, that’s right… It was a whim. And it was a joke, so…”

Iain interrupted to say sarcastically, ‘You know what girlfriend likes? When their partner proposes to them as a joke.”

Max explained, “No, but it was like one of those things where Brad was [Bradly Walsh] said, “So when’s the big day?” and then everyone laughed.

“And I said, ‘Well, it’s funny you ask,'” and put my hand in my back pocket, like that, and Maisie went all giddy.

Off camera she shook her head like that [awkwardly]so I’m glad it wasn’t real,” the pop star admitted.

Iain joked about the incident, quipped: “It was like a meme online, pausing at that point and saying ‘this is when Max realized he messed up.’

Iain Stirling’s CelebAbility continues on Thursday at 10:05pm straight after Love Island on ITV2. Watch the series so far on ITVX

It comes after Maisie insisted she ‘proved’ her relationship with Max isn’t for the cameras, as they move in together after a nine-month romance.

The actress and the Wanted star have come under scrutiny for their 13-year age difference, but Maisie has maintained that their relationship is forever.

The Strictly contestant recently moved in with her boyfriend and revealed that they spent a month chilling out in their new pad, enjoying some quality time together after a hectic few months of work.

Maisie said in a new interview about the criticism of their relationship, “When you’re in a new relationship, people have a lot to say. But we’ve been together for a while now and we’ve proven that our love isn’t just for the cameras.

“We really are two best friends, in love and so happy. We still get negative comments.

“Family and friends are so supportive and have never seen us so happy. I’ve never been in such a happy position.’
