Matthew Stafford effectively ended the night for the Rams with a fourth quarter pick-six against the 49ers Monday night, extending the hosts’ lead to 15 points with about six minutes to go.
The Rams were far from their best in the difficult matchup, which they lost 24-9 but trailed just eight in the fourth quarter with the ball on San Francisco’s 44-yard line.
But all hopes of a comeback were crushed when 49ers safety Talanoa Hufanga jumped a screen route and intercepted a ball intended for Cooper Kupp behind the scrimmage, sending it back the rest of the way for a touchdown.

It was a night to quickly forget for Matthew Stafford, who now leads the league in interceptions
The draining play means Stafford now leads the league in interceptions with six, as the Super Bowl-winning quarterback failed to reach the lofty heights of last season’s four games in 2022.
Stafford suffered from elbow tendinitis in the off-season, and perhaps that ailment is still ongoing as the 34-year-old has had a slow start this season.
Stafford has thrown just four touchdowns in as many games and has not passed more than 254 yards in any game, with Monday’s loss actually being that game.
It wasn’t a great performance for him against the 49ers, though, as it took him 48 tries to reach that number and took seven sacks.
The offense looked pretty lifeless when he didn’t target Cooper Kupp (19 times!)
The poor offensive effort marked the first time since Week 16 of the 2020 season that the Rams failed to score a touchdown, as kicker Matt Gay accounted for all nine of the team’s points.
The next test for LA won’t be much easier, but at least they’ll have the comfort of SoFi Stadium.
They host the Cowboys in the late afternoon timeslot next Sunday.
